    Like I said, it's the act of hitting an NPC with a shot that may or may not cause something that'll make the game CTD. I'll give this a shot but I don't think animations or legendary effects are the main cause. So far, in my experience, it is animations or custom legendary effects (esp if scripted, usually poorly written) that cause the majority of my CTDs when it's related to weapons. If you still crash, check if you are using custom legendary effects and check the mod pages for each of those mods.
